Alumna Continues Her CSP Journey: Amanda Och
Amanda Och (’14) is a recent graduate of Concordia, earning a B.A. in English with an emphasis in Professional Writing. She is continuing her journey at CSP as the Alumni Associate in the Office of Alumni Relations.
Originally from the Twin Cities area, Amanda has always had a passion for reading. In fact, she earned her Girl Scout Gold Award by creating a library for a home in Stillwater, MN that houses physically and/or mentally impaired adults. This project involved the collection and organization of over 2,000 books as well as the construction of multiple large bookshelves.
In addition, Amanda always had passion for learning, which pushed her to participate in Minnesota’s Post-Secondary Enrollment Option program which allowed her to attend college courses during her junior and senior years of high school.
After graduating high school, Amanda attended Creighton University for a semester studying pre-Pharmacy. “I quickly realized that chemistry and I didn’t get along, so I decided to come back home to pursue education. Concordia just seemed like the natural fit for me.”
“I found my home here at Concordia. I have been given so many opportunities that I am so thankful for.” Not only did Amanda graduate in three years – even after changing her major to English – but she also got the chance to study abroad in Italy in 2013. What started as a two-week excursion to Rome and Florence turned into an eight-month stay in Northern Italy. She lived in a small town called Tradate, which lies about twenty miles from the Swiss border. Amanda worked for the family that she lived with as an au pair and English teacher for their two-year-old twin girls. ”I had the time of my life and I would never have been able to get this experience without the flexibility of my professors who allowed me to take a number of classes online.”
Upon returning to Concordia in the fall of 2013, Amanda served as the Production Manager for The Sword, Concordia’s student run newspaper, where she was previously a journalist. She worked closely with the Editor-in-Chief to design and organize each monthly issue. Amanda also worked in the Writing Center and in Career Services. In addition, she spent twelve hours a week during her spring semester as a Marketing and Sales Intern at Free Spirit Publishing.
As graduation approached, Amanda had mixed emotions. “Of course, I was thrilled to be graduating, but I was sad that I was leaving Concordia and the family I have here.” Luckily, Amanda is going to be staying with us here at Concordia as the Alumni Associate. She will be using her study abroad experience in assisting with the Alumni and Friends Travel Program which is set in Turkey and Greece this year. “I am so blessed to have been given the chance to continue to grow at Concordia and am thrilled to be getting to know and traveling with other alumni.”
Amanda is engaged to be married in June 2015.
