Revolution is in the air as Germinal re-creates the gut-wrenching poverty and the intense daily struggles of French coal-miners in 1884. Etienne Lantier, an idealistic migrant worker, arrives in the forbidding town of Montsou in the bleak area of northern France to earn a living as a miner. As conditions worsen, youthful idealism transforms him into the unwitting leader of a massive workers’ strike, leading to violent clashes with armed soldiers brought in to defend the mine. The result is a story which depicts how the most desperate of circumstances give rise to the noblest of passions as well as the ensuing destruction.

Considered to be novelist Emile Zola's masterpiece, Germinal is notable for its uncompromising and harsh realism. This dramatic adaptation, a world premiere, turns the story into a bold, theatrical display of raw revolutionary energy in the spirit of Les Miserables.
